Antecedents: People with intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) with extensive support needs are more likely to live in segregated and highly institutionalized environments. The aim of this study was to analyze changes in functioning and quality of life for people with IDD and extensive support needs after transitioning to ordinary homes in the community. Method: The sample included 54 adults with IDD and extensive support needs, who were assessed at three time points: before transition, six months later, and one year after transition. The Resident Choice Scale, San Martin Quality of Life Scale, Active Support Participation Measure, and the Behavior Problem section of the Inventory for Client and Agency Planning were administered. Partial least squares-structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) and t-tests for repeated measures were carried out. Results: There were significant improvements in decision-making, participation and independence in daily activities and quality of life, as well as a reduction in the presence and intensity of behavioral problems. Conclusions: The benefits found in this study support transformation processes towards more inclusive services and professional practices that foster people's rights and feeling of belonging to the community. This article argues for attention to the affective investments that motivate working people’s life choices in contemporary China by tracing the materiality of the development of aspirations in a rapidly developing context. Turning to the work of Bernard Stiegler, the article contends that for working people, the demand to labour is based not just on the alienation of the means of production (savoir-faire), but also the means of living a good life (savoir-vivre), which is displaced into a future made knowable within the material world in the present. The article shows how the developmental standard-making that produces senses of progress and legitimizes aspiration, thus compelling economic action, is alienated within the materiality of working people’s rapidly changing worlds. By referencing these temporal displacements, developmental subjects assess their own presents by comparison, justifying difficult circumstances by making progress tangible. Understanding the mechanics of aspiration and cultures of labour is vital in light of critiques by labour geographers of the equation of labour agency with traditional, formalized labour politics, as there remains much work to be done to understand how and why people become workers in the first place. In a world of growing international competition and rivalry between China and the United States, Latin America and the European Union (EU) are caught in the same thorny dilemma. Positioned between these global giants, both regions are facing a retorn to a Westphalian system of nation-states, which undermines their roles as emerging regional players. In view of these new global challenges in Latin America and the EU, this paper uses a qualitative and comparative approach to explore foreign policy discourses on autonomy in both regions. During the last five decades, the scientific study of classroom talk has converged in the tradition of classroom dialogue. Empirical research has progressed, showing how dialogic forms of organizing classroom talk would be more conducive to student learning and development than monologic forms. However, two major problems remain unresolved. On the one hand, and despite the research mentioned above, teachers still mostly use a monological teaching method, thus arranging monological ways of organizing classroom discourse. On the other hand, our understanding of the psychological processes that would explain the relationship between the way of organizing classroom talk and learning is still limited. In the present article, we introduce a special section in which we have brought together six papers that sought to extend conceptually and methodologically the limits of the study of classroom talk by explicitly adopting the notion of discursive interactions in the classroom. In a constantly evolving world, it is crucial to examine how different social agents approach social change. Within the communication field, this concept is inherently tied to the tradition of Communication for Development and Social Change (CDSC). This tradition has developed regionally, with significant contributions from Latin American scholars, and with less prominence from North American authors, who have been accused of unilaterally imposing development models. In this context, two questions originate our study: What are the relationships of continuity and disruption that characterize the predominant trends and approaches in the conceptualization and practice of social change in Anglo-America and Latin America? And how do academic perspectives relate to concrete experiences of social change in the field of CDSC in the Americas? To address these questions, we conducted a scoping review that allows us to compare the understanding of social change among Anglo-American and Latin American scholars, as well as their ability to implement these ideas as agents of change. The results lead us to discuss three relationships of continuity and disruption between two communities of practice in the Americas: First, Latin American scholars associate social change with media communication and diversity in the symbolic representation of communities, while Anglo-Americans link it to social justice and political activism. Second, both groups blur the distinction between development and social change by operationalizing both in terms of community well-being and prosperity. Ecological crisis, massive inequality and war: our world is at a dangerous tipping point. Yet the present global crisis defies simple description and is difficult to explain. To clarify, it is argued that the character of the world crisis today is triple: ecological, economic and political. Underlying all three dimensions is the capitalist form of world society. The consolidation of this capitalist form was accompanied by the emergence of the concept of development within liberal philosophy. During the 20th century, development came to define geographical regions and legitimate capitalist political economy on a world scale. Capitalism came to be taken as development: I call this ‘capitalism qua development’. Because of the triple crisis, capitalism qua development is beginning to undergo a profound change. In an era of rapid global heating and ecological crisis, the tie between capital and development is straining and likely to give way. Capital is becoming more closely attached to the concept of adaptation. I argue that, in the most likely scenario (‘Climate Leviathan’), capitalism qua development will be recast as adaptation. Some signs of this shift are already apparent. Since this is only a likely prospect, three other possibilities – fates of the concept and practice of development – are proposed. Bolivia se caracteriza por ser un país con un territorio abundante en recursos naturales. Su historia está marcada por ciclos económicos influenciados principalmente por la explotación y exportación de materias primas. En este ámbito el sector de mayor relevancia ha sido el de la minería. Históricamente la minería ha jugado un papel importante en la composición económica de Bolivia. En la época de la colonia, 1544, el cerro rico de Potosí, ubicado al sur oeste de lo que hoy es territorio boliviano, albergaba uno de los depósitos de plata más importantes de su tiempo. En 1870, en el periodo de la república, la mina de Ayacucho tomó ese lugar con sus abundantes reservas de plata. A principios del siglo XX, la mina La Salvadora fue considerada una de las reservas más grandes de estaño del mundo. Estos ejemplos representan algunos de los momentos más sobresalientes en los cuales la coincidencia entre la existencia de abundantes recursos y una elevada demanda en el mercado internacional, pudo haber generado circunstancias propicias para el desarrollo económico de cualquier nación. Sin embargo, aun con condiciones externas favorables debido a los escenarios descritos anteriormente, no se lograron generar mejoras sustanciales en las condiciones económicas de las organizaciones socio-territoriales contenidas en el ámbito geográfico de lo que hoy es Bolivia. Esto puede ser atribuido en la época de la colonia, al dominio y control de los colonizadores españoles sobre los recursos naturales en beneficio de la corona española. El periodo posterior a la fundación de la República de Bolivia, estaría marcado por el predominio de capitales, tanto nacionales como extranjeros, en los procesos de toma de decisiones de la política económica nacional.

Este artículo integra conocimiento teórico y empírico en el abordaje educativo, no meramente escolar, de las conductas antisociales en la infancia y la adolescencia, con la plural pretensión de comprender mejor estos comportamientos, neutralizar los factores de riesgo, establecer las medidas oportunas una vez que se detectan y promover la prosocialidad. Dado el carácter heterogéneo y evolutivo de la antisocialidad, se subraya que, además de las actuaciones legales y clínicas, se precisa una intervención educativa de amplio espectro en los distintos contextos. Se trata en gran medida de establecer bases pedagógicas desde las que se implique a los propios menores y se oriente coordinadamente la acción familiar, escolar y social. Tras revisar distintas concepciones sobre la antisocialidad y otras nociones cercanas, se describen, en sintonía con el enfoque propuesto y el abandono de las intervenciones exclusivamente judiciales o terapéuticas, vías de actuación educativa integral, desde una perspectiva pedagógica humanista, multidimensional y sistémica, en la que la interconexión de actores y entornos desempeña un papel trascendental. Estructuralmente, la acción educativa se sistematiza a partir de cuatro vertientes (cognitiva, emocional, ética y social), que posibilitan la prevención de la antisocialidad y el fomento de la convivencia.

El presente texto analiza el conflicto socioambiental en la vereda de Pirgua. A su vez, la investigación define las causas que le dan origen, y propone una política pública que permita establecer un modelo de cómo asumir los grandes retos sociales y ambientales. El análisis de la investigación está dado por la caracterización de un fenómeno social (conflicto) mediante el modelo metodológico de tres etapas; análisis del conflicto, legitimidad de acción y los actores dentro del conflicto y, por último, el conflicto dentro de un conflicto central (Fontaine, 2004). La investigación encontró que existe una concentración de cargas ambientales negativas que vienen generando relaciones contrapuestas entre la comunidad que habita la vereda frente a las instituciones y empresas privadas que administran las cargas. Esta tención es causada principalmente por la inadecuada planificación territorial y el desconocimiento de los enfoques que reconocen los derechos humanos dentro de la noción de desarrollo.

Las políticas de cuidado han ganado relevancia en América Latina debido al contexto socioeconómico de la región desde la década de 1990. La evolución de los factores demográficos también ha contribuido a que los cuidadores hayan modificado tanto su número como su composición y necesidades. El objetivo de este documento es analizar las políticas sociales de cuidado en Chile. Para ello, se utilizó una metodología analítica descriptiva con el fin de comprender los mecanismos operativos. A partir de fuentes secundarias, se muestra cómo las mujeres en Chile construyen parte de sus identidades e historias por medio del cuidado de los demás. Igualmente, es conveniente identificar el contexto histórico en el que se han implementado estas políticas, principalmente en el país donde se inició la aplicación de las reformas económicas, políticas y sociales neoliberales, y cómo el Estado ha reducido su influencia y alcance en el diseño e implementación de estas medidas destinadas a disminuir la desigualdad y mejorar las condiciones de vida de la mayoría de la población.

Al hablar de ciudades inteligentes, el estado de la cuestión actual evidencia que se trata de un término complejo, polisémico y en constante cambio. El ángulo del planteamiento de la presente investigación radicó en arrojar luz sobre el concepto de ciudad inteligente en lo concerniente a su aparato teórico y práctico: el software. Se buscó abordar su significado, objetivos y metas específicas, especialmente en relación con los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible fijados en el año 2015. El objetivo principal fue determinar bajo una mirada crítica si realmente son herramientas que estén funcionando como agentes de desarrollo urbano. Para ello se llevó a cabo un análisis de un total de 25 programas, bajo criterios de naturaleza temática y técnica, en cuanto a usos, funcionalidades, potencial de aplicación y áreas afines. Los resultados obtenidos han evidenciado la inexistencia de un programa que sea capaz de abarcar la gestión integral de una ciudad inteligente. Las mayores carencias han sido detectadas en la cuestión medioambiental, rural y cultural, demostrando un abandono de los ODS, así como la falta de líneas de trabajo conjuntas entre ambos.

En el deporte, al clasificar durante el período de formación a los jugadores en función del año de nacimiento, se generan desigualdades en cuanto al número de oportunidades de aprendizaje. El presente estudio investiga el efecto de la edad relativa (según el año de nacimiento) en las máximas categorías del balonmano español. Se analiza su presencia y se observa si las variables género y nacionalidad influyen en él. Para ello, fueron recogidas las fechas de nacimiento, el género y la nacionalidad de los 1141 jugadores y jugadoras de las dos principales ligas españolas (Liga ASOBAL y Liga Guerreras Iberdrola) durante 3 temporadas. Tras clasificarlos por año de nacimiento, asumiendo una distribución equitativa, los resultados demostraron únicamente diferencias significativas en el caso del balonmano masculino (χ² = 5,04; p = 0,02) con un coeficiente RAE de 1,20. La distribución en el caso de las jugadoras fue más homogénea. Al observar la muestra en función de la nacionalidad las mayores diferencias se dieron en los jugadores extranjeros (χ² = 7,20; p = 0,01) con un coeficiente RAE de 1,45. Por tanto, se puede afirmar que el RAE a causa del año de nacimiento únicamente influye en el balonmano masculino de élite español, provocado por aquellos jugadores internacionales que militan en los equipos de la Liga ASOBAL. La presencia de estos deportistas extranjeros es la causa de las únicas diferencias observadas entre los grupos analizados.

Billions in development aid is provided annually by international donors in the Majority World, much of which funds health equity. Yet, common neocolonial practices persist in development that compromise what is done in the name of well-intentioned policymaking and programming. Based on a qualitative analysis of fifteen case studies presented at a 2022 conference, this research examines trends involving unethical partnerships, policies, and practices in contemporary global health. The analysis identifies major modern-day issues of harmful policy and programming in international aid. Core issues include inequitable partnerships between and representation of international stakeholders and national actors, abuse of staff and unequal treatment, and new forms of microaggressive practices by Minority World entities on low-/middle-income nations (LMICs), made vulnerable by severe poverty and instability. When present, these issues often exacerbate institutionalized discrimination, hostile work environments, ethnocentrism, and poor sustainability in development. These unbalanced systems perpetuate a negative development culture and can place those willing to speak out at risk. At a time when the world faces increased threats including global warming and new health crises, development and global health policy and practice must evolve through inclusive dialogue and collaborative effort. The article delves into the analysis of emotional education as an educational alternative to face the discouraging results that, in terms of comprehensive development, are evident in the child population in the post-pandemic context. The general objective is to establish an initial approach to the holistic and globalized vision of emotional education as an educational alternative that cannot postponed after returning to face-to-face teaching. To do this, we start by describing the dimensions of child development that were affected as a result of the closure of schools during the pandemic. Then, given the limitations of traditional education to face these effects, emotional education is supported as an alternative, assessing its historical and current challenges. Background: Early detection of suspected neurodevelopmental delay allows for timely diagnosis and appropriate intervention, for which numerous screening tests have been developed. However, most are complex and impractical for health-care workers at the community level. This study aimed to validate the KARVI scale in the neurodevelopment assessment of children under 1 year of age. Methods: We conducted an observational, longitudinal, comparative, inferential, and prospective study. Healthy children without risk factors for developing neurodevelopmental delay from 0 to 12 months of age were evaluated remotely using the Zoom® application. The Child Development Evaluation Test and the KARVI scale were applied once a month for four consecutive months. Results: Fifty individuals were analyzed, with a predominance of males in 52%. Adequate percentages for a screening test were obtained in the first evaluation with a sensitivity of 70% (confidence interval [CI] 95% 34.75-93.33) and a specificity of 75% (CI 95% 58.8-87.31), and in the fourth evaluation with a sensitivity of 100% (CI 95% 29.4-100) and a specificity of 78.72% (CI 95% 64.34-89.3), being significant in both evaluations (p = 0.007 and p = 0.001, respectively). Conclusions: The KARVI scale has the elements to be an effective screening test for suspected neurodevelopmental delay, but more extensive studies are needed to obtain more reliable results. This text analyses the socio-environmental conflict in the village of Pirgua. At the same time, the research defines the causes that give rise to it, and proposes a public policy that allows establishing a model for how to take on the great social and environmental challenges. The analysis of the research is given by the characterisation of a social phenomenon (conflict) by means of the three-stage methodological model; analysis of the conflict, legitimacy of action and the actors within the conflict and, finally, the conflict within a central conflict (Fontaine, 2004). The investigation found that there exists a concentration of negative environmental burdens that are generating opposing relationships between the community that inhabits the village versus the institutions and private companies that manage the burdens. This tension is mainly caused by inadequate territorial planning and ignorance of the approaches that recognise human rights within the notion of development. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID‐19 pandemic represented one of the most significant wicked policy problems in modern history. Global policy efforts to combat the pandemic reflect a diverse set of approaches, with varying underlying goals and values driving the policy choices. This article studies the pandemic response of two small island developing states, Mauritius and Seychelles, to better understand the policy landscape in this understudied African region. Evidence from these two island nations provides important insights into the opportunities and constraints faced by island developing states. Using in‐depth qualitative interviews with policy actors and reviews of official policy documents, this article studies the policy landscape of these two small island developing states. Findings from this research offer insights for scholars and practitioners interested in the intersection of wicked problems and policy. The massive influx of Rohingyas has become one of the world's worst humanitarian and human rights crises. The Bangladesh government does not have any domestic or international regulations to set up an administrative process to address the issue of Rohingya refugees. Recently, Bangladesh and Myanmar initiated the repatriation of around 3000 Rohingyas. Yet, the repatriation process has not been successful as none of the Rohingya agreed to return to Myanmar without citizenship rights and security. Against this backdrop, this study explores whether education can act as a solution to integrate Rohingya refugees into mainstream society in Bangladesh. Applying purposive sampling, primary data was collected through semi‐structured interviews, key informant interviews, and telephone interviews. Data analysis was performed through conversation analysis. The findings reveal that the integration of Rohingya refugees through education is a far‐reaching dream as refugee management and education policies do not permit the integration of Rohingya refugees into mainstream society in Bangladesh. Rohingya refugees have demanded education as their right to develop their self‐respect and dignity. In contrast, the Bangladesh government viewed education as a relief program rather than development and integration. This article supports the claim of academics that the Bangladeshi government should provide education to Rohingya refugee children from a development perspective to protect and ensure their self‐respect and dignity. ProSAVANA was a technical cooperation program signed between the governments of Brazil, Japan, and Mozambique. Its aim was to promote agricultural development in the northern region of this African country. In this article, I give an ethnographic account of ProSAVANA's implementation and the different struggles that emerged in opposition to its undertakings. As I describe, the program promoters constantly mobilized three allegories evocative of connections and flow in their fieldwork, speeches, or documents: parallels, chains, and corridors. Although, at the territorial level, these were connected to effects of isolation and fixation of the local population and their agriculture. Based on this controversy, I suggest that ProSAVANA can be understood as those world design projects that perform what Anna Tsing called a "plantation ecology," that is, machines to produce the same, that operate to expand their scale while creating simplified, homogenized, and standardized models on diverse landscapes. Nevertheless, throughout the ProSAVANA implementation, their plantation designs were (re)composed both by technicians who aimed to promote its development model and by peasants and activists critical of the program, showing that these configurations alone cannot comprehensively circumscribe human agency. The party system literature has generally paid little attention to whether traditional beliefs have any impact on voters' electoral behavior and the stability of party systems. The purpose of the present study shows that the stability of party systems and the pervasiveness of traditional beliefs go hand-in-hand. This article is expected to advance the scholarly understanding of the political consequences of traditional beliefs by showing that voters who hold traditional beliefs or engage in traditional practices are not simply less likely to have pro-democratic attitudes or have a greater appreciation of dictatorial rule, but also more likely to vote for ruling parties in elections. The evidence presented in the article sustains a basic claim; namely, that the pervasiveness of traditional beliefs in Togolese society should be regarded as one of the determinants of the party system's stability.
